Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions buyers ask before ordering big bags and FIBCs.
What does SWL actually stand for, and how do I go about choosing the right capacity?
Safe Working Load (SWL) refers to the maximum weight capacity a big bag can safely accommodate. Selection should always be based on the precise mass of the material rather than its volume, and opting for a higher SWL rating is advisable if you are uncertain.
What is the safety factor on a big bag?
A safety factor (e.g., 5:1 or 6:1) indicates the ratio of break load strength compared to the safe working load limit.
Could you explain the difference in performance standards between a 5:1 and a 6:1 Safety Factor on big bags?
A 5:1 rating demonstrates that an FIBC can support five times its SWL during testing, which is the baseline requirement for conventional single-trip containers. A 6:1 Safety Factor provides a sixfold load tolerance and is mandatory for hazardous materials, hygienic food transport, or sites governed by stringent safety codes. If you are unsure which ratio your operation demands, verify with your transport operator or local authority before placing an order.
What are the key differences between 1-loop, 2-loop, and 4-loop big bags, and when should each be used?
A four-loop bag is generally the go-to standard as it can be picked up from any angle using standard forklift equipment. Two-loop configurations are primarily designed for integrated automated handling systems, whereas single-loop variants hang from a central hook and rotate unhindered.
What is the difference between standard loops, cross corner loops and tunnel loops?
Standard loops are sewn to the top corners and stand upright. They work with most forklifts and spreader bars. Cross-corner loops are sewn diagonally across the corners, giving a more stable lift with less bag bulging — preferred for heavy or dense materials. Tunnel loops run through a sleeve across the bag width and are used with pallet jacks or automated filling systems. Check with your forklift operator which type your equipment requires.
Is an internal liner necessary for my bulk bag?
An inner liner is essential if your product is fine-powdered, moisture-sensitive, food-grade, pharmaceutical, or liquid-based. Available configurations typically include form-fit, tubular, and open-top designs. If you require guidance on selecting the correct specification for your product, please get in touch with our technical team.
What is a food grade big bag?
A food-grade big bag is made from virgin materials under strict hygiene conditions with no recycled polypropylene. Required for food, animal feed, flour, sugar and similar products. Standard big bags are not suitable for direct food contact.
When do I need a UN certified big bag?
UN-certified big bags are required for transporting hazardous materials by road, sea or air. Common applications include asbestos waste and certain chemicals. Check with your logistics provider whether your material requires UN certification.
Can big bags be reused?
Big bags are rated for single use (1 trip) or multiple use (multi-trip). Multi-trip bags are built for 3 to 5 cycles with inspection between each use. Never reuse a single-use bag.
What filling and discharge options are available?
Top inlets: open top, spout top or duffle top. Bottom discharge: flat bottom, discharge spout or conical bottom. Choose based on your filling equipment and how you will empty the bag at the destination.
Do you offer bespoke logo and text printing for FIBC Big Bag orders?
Yes, bespoke printing is available in up to four colours, including your company logo and design. Minimum order quantities (MOQs) apply. Please send through your artwork and bag specifications to our team for a tailored quotation.
